STANDARD C4: PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Compounds, elements, and mixtures are categories used to organize matter. Students organize materials into these categories based on their chemical and physical behavior. Students understand the structure of the atom to make predictions about the physical and chemical properties of various elements and the types of compoounds those elements will form. An understandig of the orgaization of the Periodic Table in terms of the outer electron configuration is one of the most important tools for the chemist and student to use in prediction and explanation of the structure and behavior of atoms.
P4.p1 Kinetic Molecular Theory - Properties of solids, liquids, and gases are explained by a model of matter that is composed of tiny particles in motion.
P4.p2 Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures - Elements are a class of substances composed of a single kind of atom. Compounds are composed of two or more different elements chemically combined. Mixtures are composed of two or more different elements and/or compounds physically combined. Each element and compound has physical and chemical properties, such as boiling point, density, color, and conductivity, which are independent of the amount of the sample.

Food Science - Students will answer questions and perform developmentally appropriated experiments pertaining to food chemistry.

Science Crime Busters - The objective is to correctly identify the perpetrators of a crime or crimes by using paper chromatography and analysis of unknown solids, liquids, and plastics found at the scene of a crime. Students may also be asked to interpret the results of DNA evidence, identify hair, fibers, shoe prints, tire treads and fingerprints.
